ok where to begin… well might as well talk (complain) about my roster for this month. hey dont look at me like that! As cabin crew, when not flying complaining about our job is what we do best! so to give you a little more insight on my roster for the month ahead have a look at the pic below.
yes you read correctly, i am on reserve!!! 😥 which means airport stanby, or XXR’s!!! xxr being day off, hence the use of the 3 !!! Anyways before I get distracted again, let me explain how our reserve work.. Once every 7 months or so you are given a reserve roster. For that whole month you are on call and at the mercy of scheduling or duty control aka “the powers that be”
tell you what though. having already finish my first duty of airport standby this morning, I cant begin to explain the rush of cold air that enters the room every time that phone rings. Will they be calling out your name and staff number? who is to be evicted next? your heart stops as your senses heighten and ears twitch to hear whose name got called. Quite fun actually, well only when your name isn’t the one called… hehe
last week both me and clauderequa had some time off and decided to venture off to Miami! WHY NOT?? followed by new york..
Ok so we both returned home from our stint in Paris around 2 am. Repacked my bag and went to bed around 0330 after having a brief chat with david on the phone. Let me tell you about david, he is one of those friends who gets those 4am drunk calls coming live from zinc! but he loves it! ok back to the story… so slept about 2 hours, and woke up from my phone ringing. I answer and hear clauderics voice “are you ready??” immediately in my mind i got a mental slap from him as he could tell by the sound of my voice i was fast asleep.. So he came over and judged me severely as i throwing clothes in my bag and running around my room like a headless chicken. had a shower then ran off to the airport..
16 or so hours later we arrive in HOUSTON!! hmm well what to say, everything is bigger in texas including the average denim size.. we waited about 1 hour for our connecting flight. eventually our AMERICAN AIRLINES 737 turned up.. hmm what to say, what to say… their service routine was quite interesting, actually let me rephrase that last sentence. The “what the hell do you want to drink” routine was quite interesting. As they were walking up and down taking orders like in some diner.. however casual I quite enjoyed the entertainment they provided.
clauderic barely surviving after that 15hour flight!
Once in Miami, all Clauderic and I did was shop shop shop and shop!! We also went out and got blind drunk at some club, but that story is not for here. I don’t know if there are any children reading this blog! So let me rewind and tell you about our first morning in Miami. Clauderic decides to take us to Ihop! International House of Pancakes.. Hmm and what good pancakes they were indeed. They were so delicious and average about 1000 calories per bite. Refer to said breakfast below in the photo 😉
ok hold on... can those two words even exist in pure harmony together in the same sentence? maybe, yes, no or hell no!!?
Dating someone while working as cabin crew for an international airline can be hard work, or dare I say it “impossible”
The term being supporting someone & “being there” takes on a whole new role! What if your other half wakes up at 3am with a 40degree fever accompanied by severe vomiting? Who is there to take care of them, hold their hand and sit next to them while their kissing the porcelain rim?? Well definitely not you if your 1000’s of kilometers away sitting next to a swimming pool sipping on some exotic cocktail… (c’mon we do work hard and need our escape)
So what do we do in that situation?? Yes there is always the endless phone calls and skype conversations.. And dont forget the *baby I love you xox* sms’s prior to every take of that you sneak in last minute in the lavatory before rushing to your jumpseat before take off! the list goes on…. but is this enough to keep your other half happy? maybe, or maybe not.
Lets go back to the beginning to try and see how this actually works… and the chemistry behind it
You meet person A, lets refer to them as A… 😉 Everything goes fine on the first date, you tell them your job and they seem ok with it.. Your happy you finally met someone who accepts & respects your career choice! (but for how long?)
You spend every waking second with A after every flight because you want to see them, which is normal. But after a few months you realise that you need sleep! As you cant tell up from down, black from white, day of the week or even day from night.. So yes, things are not in the honeymoon period anymore and you dont see A as much as you used to because you need time out, or just to be alone in your room to sleep for about 14hours 😉
So A starts getting upset because your not spending as much time with them like you used to..? WHAT TO DO? nothing really, you need your sleep! But do they understand it? They say they do, but do they honestly really understand?
After the first few months of being up there in the sky, my mind starting slipping on the memory side and to be honest my rational thinking wasn’t as rational as it was before. I guess that comes with the territory, so make sure you play brain training on DS to keep your brain working! anyways back to my novel..
i guess there is no need to continue…because for the majority or some of you reading this, you would know how it ends…
if we continue to be cabin crew will we grow old alone and live in a apartment full of cats?? or whats the deal? will you find someone who would honestly be there for you and wait for you while you fly all over the place till you return home?
i have had 6days off in a row… 3 down and 3 more to go.. If majority of the other EK crew were to find out there would be a witch hunt looking for me… PLUS the fact that i didnt go anywhere would add a reward for my capture.
its a rarity to be blessed with such a good amount of days off.. but why is it that the times when I need to be in dubai im stuck all the way down the road in Auckland. And the times I need to be away from dubai, im stuck right in the middle of the desert known as Al Nahda..
ohhh on a bit of exciting news.. 😉 9 more days till my 1 year anniversary here in dub dubs.. And its been over a month of me flying on the A380… Its such an amazing aircraft! And I am really happy I have done the switch, the crew so far are great and especially the seniors. I find them more efficient and productive, and truly encourage team work among us. But your flying to the same destinations I hear you say?? Well…ummm so what! its pretty cool going to the same place, Its like your second home. I have my own routine in Sydney/Auckland & Bangkok. The other places im still trying to figure out what’s going on…
for those of u PEEPS who have no idea what our A380 looks like.. here is a sneaky peaky…. HOWEVAH!! PSS with stress on that last S.. I didnt take any of these photos myself. these were taken from the EK website and other peoples site..
im geri halliwell cool for reading books! are you geri halliwell cool??
i enjoy reading… only the last month or so I started reading.
i can’t believe what I have missed out on. its a great way to get out of reality and completely disappear into this world that you create yourself, however your body still remains in the one place… its a great way to get out of the sandy environment which is dubai..
the other day in Auckland I found myself sitting at the pool finishing my book.. (The Lovely Bones) I was so deep into this book I ended up reading over 300 pages without putting it down. After I finished the book I slowly found myself returning to my body, returning to the sun beaming down at me, the sound of water splashing in the pool around me and the noise of kids in the distance screaming and laughing around the pool.. as I was slowly returning to reality and using my own legs and body to move around I realized that my legs, neck and arms were completely sunburnt! OUCH!!! had no idea the sun was that harsh in New Zealand.. That afternoon on the crew bus heading towards the airport my mind was somewhere else, looking for another book to read. to run away into, and to completely disappear… The flight back to Sydney was busy as always and the passengers a real treat.
It has almost been one year since me arriving in dubai.. have I enjoyed it? Yes I have, would you stay another year? Most likely will. There is so much more in this world I want to discover, see and experience. With a guilty concious I have been negleting my blog.. There are many reasons for this, the main reason being I lost my copy of Adobe Photoshop and I like to make things look good and entertaining.. Without it I was not able to edit my drawings and photos the way I liked. And my moto sometimes can be if I cant make it look 110% why bother at all.. Guess thats me being stubborn and being a Taurean in the same breath..
I have bought two new books today.. The Time Travellers Wife & The lightning thief… Im currently reading the lighting thief… it was easy to get into and disappear into this strange world.. living in another country, having super powers and not knowing about them..
I am stuck in Dubai for 6 days, due to my recent stint in Paris earlier this month.. I was stuck there for 5 days!!! well sick of course and not being able to leave the hotel.. 😦 Due to that they removed my Bangkok trip and gave me 6 days in Dubai to meet my legal requirement of days off.. Those 6day Sydney Auckland trips are a bit tiring…
Im going to Paris end of the month with Clauderic which im quite excited about! And to top it all off were heading to Cape Town for a few days.. A definate trip report will follow… plus a few additional visits to the gym as I always eat up a feast when im home in CPTOWN….
